This 7 day Sri Lanka itinerary takes you through ancient cities, scenic mountains, and beautiful beaches, giving you a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.

Day 0: Arrive in Colombo

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo is Sri Lanka’s main international gateway. The airport is well connected with major cities worldwide, though most flights require at least one stop.

The national carrier, SriLankan Airlines, offers extensive routes across Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. Other airlines flying into Colombo include Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Cathay Pacific, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and American Airlines.

Day 1: Explore Colombo

Things to Do
  • Gangaramaya Temple (1 hour): One of Colombo’s most important Buddhist temples, Gangaramaya blends Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese architectural styles. It houses a vast collection of Buddhist relics, statues, and antiques. The temple’s peaceful atmosphere and intricate carvings make it a must-visit for those interested in culture and spirituality.
  • Galle Face Green (1 hour): A lively seaside promenade, Galle Face Green is the perfect place to watch the sunset, enjoy the sea breeze, and try local street food like isso wade (prawn fritters). Locals and tourists gather here to fly kites, take walks, and relax by the Indian Ocean.
  • Pettah Market & Red Mosque (1-2 hours): Pettah Market is a lively market where you can shop for souvenirs, spices, and snacks. Nearby, Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (Red Mosque) is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic buildings, with striking red-and-white striped architecture.
  • Independence Square (30 minutes): A symbol of Sri Lanka’s independence, this grand monument is surrounded by a peaceful park and colonial-era buildings. It’s a great spot for a relaxing walk or photo stop, with elegant stone pillars and a rich historical significance. A perfect escape from the city’s busy streets!
  • Colombo National Museum (1.5 hours): This museum is Sri Lanka’s largest and oldest, showcasing ancient artifacts, royal regalia, and colonial-era exhibits. It offers a deep dive into the island’s rich past, from Buddhist sculptures to Kandyan crown jewels. A must-visit for history and culture lovers!
  • Lunch or Dinner at Ministry of Crab (1.5 hours):  Located in the historic Dutch Hospital complex, Ministry of Crab is one of Asia’s best seafood restaurants. Try their famous garlic chilli crab or black pepper crab!

  • Galle Face Hotel is one of Asia’s oldest colonial hotels. Overlooking the Indian Ocean and next to Galle Face Green, this luxury hotel offers a mix of heritage charm and modern comfort, plus a stunning sunset view from the terrace.

Day 2: Colombo to Dambulla

Distance & Travel Time
  • Colombo to Sigiriya to Dambulla: 208 km (~4.5 hours by car)
Things to Do
  • Sigiriya Rock Fortress (2-3 hours): Rising 200 meters above the jungle, Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress with stunning frescoes, landscaped gardens, and the ruins of a 5th-century palace. The climb rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views and a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s royal history. A UNESCO World Heritage Site you can’t miss.
  • Dambulla Royal Cave Temple (1.5 hours): A UNESCO-listed temple, Dambulla features five caves filled with over 150 Buddha statues and intricate wall paintings dating back over 2,000 years. Perched on a hill, it offers stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere, making it one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred and awe-inspiring cultural landmarks.

Where to Stay in Dambulla
  • Try Kalundewa Retreat, a hidden paradise near Dambulla. It is an 8km drive south of Dambulla Royal Cave Temple and is on the way to Kandy (your stop for tomorrow). Day 3: Dambulla to Kandy

  • Dambulla to Kandy: 68 km (~2.25 hours by car)
Things to Do
  • Temple of the Tooth (1-1.5 hours): One of Sri Lanka’s most sacred sites, the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) houses a revered tooth relic of Buddha. This stunning temple, rich in history and rituals, attracts pilgrims and visitors seeking spiritual and cultural insight in the heart of Kandy.
  • Kandy Lake (1 hour): A peaceful oasis in the heart of Kandy, this man-made lake offers scenic walking paths, birdwatching, and temple views. Built in 1807, it’s a perfect spot for a relaxing stroll after visiting the nearby Temple of the Tooth. Take time for a stroll around the lake and take in the beauty of Kandy.
  • Royal Botanical Gardens (1.5 hours): Located in Peradeniya, these stunning gardens boast over 4,000 plant species, including towering palms, giant bamboo, and exotic orchids. Once reserved for royalty, today, it’s a tranquil escape ideal for nature walks and photography. A paradise for plant lovers and a must-visit near Kandy!

Day 4: Kandy to Ella

  • Scenic Train Ride (6 hours): One of the world’s most breathtaking train journeys, the ride from Kandy to Ella winds through lush tea plantations, misty mountains, and cascading waterfalls. With open windows and doorways for the best views, it’s a must-do experience for nature lovers and photographers!
  • Little Adam’s Peak (1.5 hours): A relatively easy hike leading to stunning panoramic views of Ella’s rolling hills and tea estates. Named after the sacred Adam’s Peak, this mini version offers a rewarding experience with sunrise or sunset vistas, making it a favourite among nature lovers and adventure seekers.
  • Nine Arches Bridge (1 hour): A stunning colonial-era railway bridge hidden in Ella’s lush greenery, Nine Arches Bridge is an iconic sight. Best visited when a train crosses, it’s a perfect spot for photography and a short jungle walk. A must-see for history and nature lovers!

  • Galle Fort (2-3 hours): A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Galle Fort is a stunning 17th-century Dutch fortress with cobblestone streets, colonial-era buildings, and charming cafés. Explore its historic ramparts, boutique shops, and museums, all set against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean.
  • Lighthouse Beach (1 hour): Located near Galle Fort, Lighthouse Beach is a scenic, palm-fringed shore perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. With golden sands and calm waters, it’s an ideal spot to unwind while enjoying stunning views of the historic Galle Lighthouse.

  • Galle to Colombo: 125 km (~2.5 hours by car or train)
  • Galle to Bandaranaike International Airport: 150 km (~3 hours by car)
Things to Do (if time allows)
  • Tsunami Memorial Museum (30 minutes): A small but deeply moving museum, it documents the devastating 2004 tsunami through photographs, survivor stories, and artifacts. Located near Hikkaduwa, it offers a sobering yet important insight into one of Sri Lanka’s greatest tragedies, honouring those affected and educating visitors about the disaster.
  • Relax at a Beach Café (1 hour): Enjoy fresh seafood and a final taste of Sri Lankan cuisine before heading to the airport.
  • If you have a late flight, you can stop at Bentota Beach or Turtle Hatchery in Kosgoda on the way to Colombo.

  • Best Time to Visit: December to April (for best weather).
  • Transport Options: Private drivers are convenient, but trains and buses are budget friendly.
  • Currency: Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR).
  • Language: Sinhala & Tamil, but English is widely spoken.
