How to See the Best of Graz in Just One Day

If you’re wondering what to see in Graz in one day, you’re not alone – we almost skipped Graz ourselves. But after spending a few days there between Christmas and New Year’s, we were completely won over by its mix of charm, history, and easy-going vibe.

This 1 Day Graz Itinerary is perfect if you’re short on time or visiting as a day trip from Vienna. You’ll explore hidden staircases, UNESCO-listed courtyards, and Gothic churches, and end with panoramic views over the city’s red rooftops.

Whether you’re visiting Graz in a day or planning your first trip, this guide covers exactly how to make the most of it – especially if you’re a traveller over 50 who loves culture without the chaos.

🚆 Short on time? If you can’t spend a night in Graz, consider a day trip from Vienna to Graz – it’s a scenic and easy way to experience Austria’s second city in just one day!

Morning - Explore Graz Old Town

Stay: Palais-Hotel Erzherzog Johann

Why We Recommend It: This historic hotel is right beside Hauptplatz, making it easy to step out and be instantly immersed in the city’s charm.

📌 Tip: Book a room facing the square if you can – it’s especially atmospheric during the festive season.

Hauptplatz & Graz Old Town

Time Needed: ~1 hour

🚶‍♀️ How to Get There: From the hotel, simply walk outside – you’re already there!

📌 Tip: Start early to enjoy the streets while they’re quiet – especially if you’re visiting in high season.

Begin your day in Hauptplatz, the main square and historic heart of Graz. Surrounded by colourful, historic buildings, Hauptplatz is a perfect spot to settle in and soak up the atmosphere. The grand Rathaus (Town Hall) anchors the square, while market stalls and sidewalk cafés buzz with locals going about their day.

From here, let yourself wander into Graz’s Old Town. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s full of charm – narrow alleyways, hidden courtyards, and layers of architecture that tell the story of centuries past, from Gothic to Baroque.

This part of the city is compact and walkable, with each corner offering something new – from artisan shops and cozy cafés to ornate churches and statues.

Graz Old Town

Landhaus Courtyard

Time Needed: ~20 minutes

🚶‍♂️ How to Get There: Just a short walk from Hauptplatz – follow Herrengasse and look for the understated entrance.

📌 Tip: Visit in the morning before events begin – the courtyard hosts concerts and exhibitions in warmer months.

The Landhaus Courtyard is one of Graz’s architectural highlights, yet first-time visitors often overlook it. Built in the 16th century, it’s a prime example of Renaissance design in Austria. The three-level arcade with its symmetrical arches and columns feels almost Italian – no surprise, since an Italian architect designed it.

Entry is free, and it’s a peaceful spot to soak in a little history before continuing your day. If you’ve got a coffee in hand, there are benches around the edges where you can sit and take it all in.

Midday – Staircases, Cathedrals & Tombs

Double Spiral Staircase (Burg)

Time Needed: ~15–20 minutes

🚶‍♂️ How to Get There: Walk from the Landhaus Courtyard (~5–7 minutes through the Old Town)

📌 Tip: It’s inside the Burg complex – look for signage or ask a staff member. It’s easy to miss! It’s at the back of the courtyard on your left.

This late-Gothic architectural gem is one of Graz’s most unique sights. Built in 1499, the Double Spiral Staircase consists of two intertwining staircases that appear to dance around each other as they rise – you’ll go up one spiral and find yourself crossing paths with those coming down the other.

Also known as the “Staircase of Reconciliation,” it’s a quiet, atmospheric stop tucked away inside Graz Castle (Burg). There’s no ticket booth or formal entrance, making it feel like you’ve discovered a true local secret. It’s a brief visit, but a memorable one.

Graz Cathedral (Dom)

✅ Time Needed: ~30 minutes

🚶‍♀️ How to Get There: 2-minute walk from the Burg

📌 Tip: Look up at the fresco outside – the “Landplagenbild” – a powerful mural depicting plague, war, and famine.

Step inside one of the city’s most significant religious buildings – the Graz Cathedral, built in the 15th century in the Gothic style. From the outside, the structure is fairly restrained, but inside you’ll find a bright, peaceful interior with vaulted ceilings, ornate gold altars, and soft natural light.

It’s a beautiful place for a moment of reflection or to admire the artistry and history that fills the space. Despite being central, it’s rarely crowded – perfect for mid-day quiet.

Inside Graz Cathedral
Inside Graz Cathedral

Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II

Time Needed: ~30 minutes

🚶‍♂️ How to Get There: Directly adjacent to the Cathedral

📌 Tip: From the Schlossberg later in the day, look back and spot the greenish-blue dome – it stands out beautifully from above.

Right beside the Cathedral is something much more ornate: the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II. This lavish Baroque tomb is the resting place of the Habsburg emperor and his family, and it’s a striking contrast to the simplicity of the nearby Cathedral.

Inside, the mausoleum features grand stonework, vivid ceiling paintings, and rich detail. The architecture alone is reason to visit, but the sense of imperial history makes it even more powerful. Entry is ticketed, and worth it if you enjoy royal history or stunning ecclesiastical design.

Afternoon – Schlossberg, Clock Tower & City Views

Schlossberg Funicular + Clock Tower (Uhrturm)

Time Needed: ~1.5–2 hours (including walk and photo stops)

🚶‍♀️ How to Get There: Walk from the Cathedral (~10–12 mins) to the base of Schlossberg

📌 Tip: Take the funicular up for ease and views, then walk down via the 260 steps next to the slide, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, take the slide to the bottom!.

No visit to Graz is complete without heading up Schlossberg Hill, the green heart of the city that rises right above the Old Town. From the top, you’ll get sweeping panoramic views over the red-tiled rooftops, church spires, and distant hills.

Start by taking the Schlossbergbahn Funicular – a quick and scenic ride that takes you up the hill with minimal effort. Once at the top, stroll through Schlossberg Park, where walking paths, shady trees, and flower beds make it an enjoyable break from city streets. Take your time and explore the various paths through the park.

The highlight here is the Uhrturm (Clock Tower) – Graz’s most iconic landmark, dating back to the 13th century. With its oversized clock face and historic charm, it’s both a symbol of the city and a great photo spot.

🎯 Bonus: As you admire the view from Schlossberg, look down over the city and see if you can spot the striking, blue bubble-like roof of Kunsthaus Graz, the city’s contemporary art museum. Its futuristic design contrasts sharply with the old-world charm of the rest of Graz, and it’s known as the “Friendly Alien” for a reason.

Evening – Sunset, Dinner & One Last Stroll

Evening Walk to Murinsel

Time Needed: ~30–45 minutes

🚶‍♀️ How to Get There: From Schlossberg stairs, head towards the Mur River (~10-minute walk)

📌 Tip: Visit both in daylight and again at night – it’s beautifully lit and feels like two different places.

Wrap up your day in Graz with a short and scenic walk to one of its most unique landmarks: the Murinsel, an artificial island in the middle of the Mur River. Designed by American artist Vito Acconci, its seashell-like structure houses a small café and amphitheatre, connected to both riverbanks by footbridges.

In the evening, the structure glows with soft blue lights, and the sound of the river below adds to the atmosphere. Whether you stop for a drink or just take a few photos, it’s a peaceful and modern way to end your day in a city that effortlessly blends history with innovation.

Dinner at El Gaucho

Time Needed: ~1.5–2 hours

🚶‍♂️ How to Get There: ~5-minute walk from Hauptplatz

📌 Tip: Book ahead if you’re visiting on a weekend or during the festive season – it’s popular!

If you’re a steak lover, El Gaucho is your spot. Located just off the main square, it offers high-quality steaks, stylish interiors, and a cozy yet upscale vibe, perfect for wrapping up your one-day adventure in Graz.

FAQs – 1 Day Graz Itinerary

Absolutely. Graz is compact and walkable, making it ideal for a one-day itinerary. You’ll be able to explore its UNESCO-listed Old Town, climb (or ride) up Schlossberg, visit unique attractions like the double spiral staircase, and enjoy river views, all in a single day.

In one day, focus on:

  • Hauptplatz & Old Town
  • Landhaus Courtyard
  • Double Spiral Staircase
  • Graz Cathedral & Mausoleum
  • Schlossberg & Clock Tower
  • Murinsel for a night-time stroll

Graz is well-connected:

  • By Train: ~2.5 hours from Vienna. Comfortable, scenic, and convenient.
  • By Air: Graz Airport (GRZ) serves several European cities.
  • By Car: Easily reached via Austria’s motorway system — a great option if you’re planning a wider Austria itinerary.
  • 👉 Read our guide to hiring a car overseas

Yes – the city centre is very pedestrian-friendly. Most major sights are within a 10–15 minute walk, and public transport is excellent for reaching farther spots like Eggenberg Palace.

Graz is beautiful year-round, but late spring, early autumn, and the Christmas season are particularly magical. We visited between Christmas and New Year’s and loved the festive atmosphere without the heavy crowds of Vienna or Salzburg.

Final Thoughts – Is One Day in Graz Enough?

If you’re short on time, one day in Graz is absolutely enough to get a real sense of what makes this city so special. It’s compact, walkable, and packed with a blend of historical charm and unexpected surprises – from Gothic cathedrals to double spiral staircases and modern architectural icons.

We originally added Graz to our Austria itinerary almost as an afterthought. But by the time we left, it had become one of our favourite stops. Whether you’re drawn to culture, history, or simply love exploring beautiful European cities without the overwhelming crowds, Graz delivers.
