Mount Morgan is a charming Queensland town full of history and natural beauty. The town was founded in 1882 and quickly grew due to the discovery of gold. The mine was one of Australia’s richest gold mines, and for a time, it was one of the world’s richest gold mines. This mining boom brought prosperity and a rich heritage, making Mount Morgan a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers.
The mine closed in 1990, and the town now has a population of approximately 2,500.

Driving is the best way to get to Mount Morgan. From Rockhampton, it’s a simple 30 to 40 minute journey via the Burnett Highway.
The best time to visit Mount Morgan is during the cooler months, from April to September. The weather is pleasant, and you can comfortably explore the outdoor attractions without the summer heat.

One of the town’s unique features is the Private Victor Stanley Jones Suspension Bridge over the Dee River. There were originally six suspension bridges over the river that provided easy access to the town and the mine. However, none of the original bridges remain.
This bridge is a replica. It is named after Private Victory Stanley, who was sadly Australia’s first military casualty. The Mount Morgan resident and employee of the gold mine died as part of the Imperial Service in South Africa on New Years Day 1900.

Since having kids I’ve visited so many historical and travel museums. Train museums top the list!

I’ve never heard of Mount Morgan before but it sounds like a really interesting place to learn more about the history of the area. The town center looks idyllic to walk around and enjoy the shops!
