Posted In: Hikes | Peru
Hiking the Inca Trail had been on my bucket list for some time.  So to actually hike the trail was a dream come true.  But there was a lot of things to do before we did the trek, getting fit for one!  But what was also important was what we should take with us on the trek. Two Packs You get to take two packs with you on the Inca Trail hike.  The first pack was carried the entire trek for us by a porter and we could pack up to 6kg in that pack.  The second pack we carried ourselves.  In this pack[...]

Chauchilla Cemetery, Nasca

While visiting Nasca we had a morning free before taking a flight over the famous Nasca lines.  So we decided to visit the Chauchilla Cemetery. You will find the cemetery located 30km south of Nasca.  After our visit to the cemetery we stopped at the Nasca airport for our flight over the Nasca lines.  Then we headed back into Nasca for the night. There is a small fee to enter the cemetery.  Once you have paid the entrance fee you are able to wonder the area yourself.  However, the best way to s[...]

Santa Catalina Convent, Arequipa

Arequipa is the colonial-era capital of Peru's Arequipa Region.  This is where you will find Santa Catalina Convent.  It was built in 1601 and was founded by Lucia Isabel Rivera de Padilla after the original convent she had founded in 1559 was destroyed by the Waynaputina Volcano.  In 1975 the convent was transformed into a museum, although a small number of nuns continue to live at the convent. Once you pay the entrance fee and enter the convent, you can hire a guide to take you on a personal tour of the mu[...]

Getting There The Ballestas Islands are a small group of islands (some are rocky outcrops) located off the coast of Peru.  The islands are accessed from Paracas, a small resort town near Pisco.  Paracas is just o[...]

Peru – Planning our Trip

Posted In: Peru
We had not travelled to South America when we ……. well I decided to travel to Peru.  Hiking the Inca Trail was a bucket list item for me so it was time to cross it off the list. So how did we plan on how to see the most of Peru that we could? What did we want to experience? I started researching what we would like to experience while in Peru – lots of Google searches, looking through tours that tour companies did, reading blog posts etc.   The list included (but obviously was not limited to) the following:[...]

Butterflies in the Peruvian Amazon

After flying from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado we took a boat ride to the Madre de Dios area where we arrived at Cayman Lodge which was our home for two nights. On the following day, we took an eight hour hike through the jungle around the lodge including taking canoes out onto two lakes.  We were able to see amazing wildlife including monkey’s, birds and an anaconda. We were also greeted by some of the most beautiful butterflies I have ever seen.  Some of the butterflies came to say hello and landed on us while o[...]
