Guide to Getting from Malé Airport to the Male Seaplane Terminal

Arriving at Malé International Airport is the first step to your Maldivian adventure, but to reach many of the stunning island resorts, you’ll need to transfer to a seaplane at the Male Seaplane Terminal. The seaplane terminal is located close to the main airport, making the transfer process straightforward. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the simple steps to get from Malé International Airport to the seaplane terminal, ensuring a smooth start to your tropical getaway.

1. Arrive at Malé International Airport

Malé International Airport (Velana International Airport) is the main gateway to the Maldives.

When you arrive at Malé International Airport, you’ll first notice the warm, tropical air and the friendly atmosphere. After disembarking from your plane, you’ll proceed through the airport to immigration. The lines can sometimes be long, so be prepared for a bit of a wait. The airport is well-organised, and signs are in English, making it easy to navigate.

Immigration and Customs:

  • Documents Required: Ensure you have your passport, a printed copy of your hotel booking, and your return ticket ready for inspection. You should also have an electronic copy of your Traveller Declaration, which must be completed online within 96 hours of your flight time.
  • Customs: After immigration, collect your luggage from the baggage claim area and proceed to customs. The process is usually quick, but you’ll need to fill out a declaration form if you have any items to declare.

Facilities at the Airport:

  • Currency Exchange: If you need local currency (Maldivian Rufiyaa), there are currency exchange counters and ATMs in the arrival hall. However, many places in the Maldives accept US dollars. As we were staying at a resort, we had a small amount of US dollars in cash and credit cards.
  • SIM Cards: You can buy a local SIM card from the telecom booths in the arrival area for internet access during your stay.

2. Find Your Resort Representative

After clearing customs, you’ll enter the main arrival hall, where representatives from various resorts and tour companies usually stand holding signs with resort names. If you have pre-arranged a transfer with your resort, look for your resort’s representative. They’ll help you with the next steps. When we arrived, there would have been over 50 people waiting with signs, so don’t panic. It may take a few minutes to find your representative.

Resort Representatives:

  • Assistance: The representative will confirm your booking and help you with your luggage. They’ll then guide you to the correct seaplane transfer counter, where you’ll check-in for your flight.
  • Check-In Process: Present your booking information at the seaplane transfer desk. The staff will check and weigh your luggage and hand you boarding passes.

Independent Travelers:

  • Finding the Counter: If you’re not with a resort, look for signs pointing to “Seaplane Transfers” or ask airport staff for directions. The counters are clearly marked and usually located near the airport’s exit.
  • Booking a Seaplane: If you still need to pre-book a seaplane transfer, you can do so directly at the seaplane counters. Availability can be limited, so it’s better to book in advance.

3. Transfer to the Male Seaplane Terminal

Once you’ve checked in at the seaplane transfer desk, a shuttle bus will transport you to the seaplane terminal. You will be escorted to the shuttle bus. The shuttle service is free and runs often.

The Shuttle Ride:

  • Duration: The ride takes about 10 minutes, and it offers a brief glimpse of the island as you move from the main terminal to the seaplane terminal.
  • Scenery: During the shuttle ride, you’ll pass by the airport’s runway and some airport facilities. You might even glimpse the seaplanes taking off or landing on the water.

4. Waiting at the Male Seaplane Terminal

Upon arrival at the Male seaplane terminal, you’ll find a comfortable lounge area where you can wait for your flight.

Seaplane Terminal Facilities:

  • Lounge Services: The terminal offers complimentary snacks, drinks, and sometimes a light meal. Wi-Fi is also available, so you can check your messages or update your travel plans.
  • Restrooms: Clean restrooms are also available.

Flight Wait Times:

  • Delays: Seaplane schedules can be affected by weather conditions, so be prepared for potential delays. However, the lounge is comfortable, and the staff will inform you about your flight status.
  • Announcements: Pay attention to the announcements in the lounge. Your flight will be called over the intercom, and the staff will guide you to the boarding area when it’s time.

5. Boarding the Seaplane at the Male Seaplane Terminal

Once your flight is called, follow the staff’s instructions to board the seaplane. Some resorts have their own seaplanes but for most people, you will be flying with Trans Maldivian Airways.

Boarding Process:

  • Group Boarding: Passengers are usually grouped together based on their resort or destination. The staff will check your boarding pass and direct you to the correct seaplane.
  • Luggage Handling: The ground crew will load your luggage onto the seaplane. You may carry a small personal item on board, but larger bags will be stored in the cargo area. We had been in Sri Lanka for two weeks before our trip to the Maldives, so I had two carry-on bags as I had taken camera gear for our safaris. I was able to hand the crew my camera backpack, explaining it was camera gear. They placed it on top of the suitcases in the cargo area and secured it behind the cargo net. You can see the cargo area from inside the plane. As I was disembarking the plane at our resort, the crew handed me my camera bag so it didn’t go with the checked luggage.

Onboard Experience:

  • Seating: Seaplanes have small cabins with about 15 seats. There’s no assigned seating, so you can choose any available seat. The large windows offer breathtaking views of the atolls and islands below.
  • Flight Duration: Seaplane flights to most resorts last 20 to 45 minutes. The aircraft’s engines can be noisy, so earplugs are provided.

6. Additional Tips for a Smooth Transfer

  • Luggage Restrictions: Seaplanes have strict luggage weight limits, typically 25 kg per person, including hand luggage. You may need to pay extra fees if your bags exceed this limit. As I was carrying camera gear, I had a US$22 excess luggage fee to pay.
  • Timing: Arrive early at the airport to ensure you have plenty of time for check-in, security checks, and potential delays. If you can arrive on a morning flight into Male, it will give you plenty of time for transfers and other potential hiccups at the seaplane terminal. We arrived in the early afternoon, transferred to the seaplane terminal and waited and waited and waited. Eventually, we were called to board our flight. The plane taxied out and then back in again as it was too late to take off, leaving us to stay in Male for the night. The airline organised a hotel for us, and we were back at the airport the following morning for a 6am flight to our resort.
